Symptoms of fungal nail infections vary. Your symptoms will depend on the type of infection you have. An infection can cause discomfort but is usually not painful. Athlete's foot is often present. Distal subungual onychomycosis, the most common fungal nail infection, is caused by dermatophytes. It affects both the nail and the skin underneath the nail.

Dermatophytes cause 90% of all fungal toenail infections. But the nail does not separate from the skin underneath. Two other types of fungal nail infections are uncommon. Candida onychomycosis is a yeast infection of the nails. Proximal subungual onychomycosis accounts for about 3% of all fungal nail infections. But it is more common in people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Only about 50% of all nail infections are fungal infections. Conditions with similar symptoms are as following. Darier disease is an inherited skin disease in which the skin slowly hardens. Eczema is a long-lasting skin disorder that may result in thickened and scaly skin. When it occurs on the hands, it may look like a fungal infection of a fingernail. Lichen planus is an uncommon, recurring skin disease that results in itchy, shiny, reddish purple spots on the skin.

Norwegian scabies is a rare and severe form of scabies. Pachyonychia is a very thick fingernail or toenail. Psoriasis is a long-lasting skin condition that causes raised red or white patches topped with silvery, scaling skin. The patches can appear on the nails. But the pitting of the nails that occurs in psoriasis does not happen in fungal nail infections. Reiter's syndrome is a bacterial infection that may result in changes of the nails.

It's important that your nails are cut straight across the top and not rounded on the sides.  This could lead to ingrown nails.  Try cutting nails after they are softened from a shower, bath, or foot soak.  Use a file to smooth rough edges.  There are some electric devices that may make this task easier.  

Another home remedy to treat ingrown toenails is to soak the foot in warm water and salt for around 30 minutes. This procedure should be followed for about 15 days. Each time after soaking your foot, gently remove the overgrown skin from the nail with the help of tweezers. What is the best spray for Athletes Foot? Or powder, cream?

A cream thats really cheap called Lotrimin. You can buy it anywhere and they even have generic versions. It should cure it in a day or so, as long as you don't reinfect yourself. Bleach or wash anything that came in contact with the fungus.

I've had this Nail Fungus for years now and I don't know how to get rid of it. I started taking Lamisil tabs but they are so expensive ($350/month supply) and my insurance will no longer pay for it. I have heard of using vinegar, tea tree oil and hydrogen peroxide. Has anyone had any success with any of these remedies? Or other ones?

I had my doubts in tea tree oil for curing fungus, but not only did it cure my nail fungus but it also cured my planters wart that the doctor hadn't been able to kill with freezing.

• Stage-4, the extraction of the nail followed by total ablation of the nail matrix (matricectomy). This procedure should be reserved for advanced cryptosis and only then after informed consent (consulting with and confirming the patient's understanding of the procedure) and only then after thoughtful reflection. After performing a stage-4 matricectomy the toenail will never grow back.

An ingrown toenail is absolutely an irritating and aggravating health condition suffered by many in today's population.

It occurs when the pointed corner of the toenail continues to grow and invades the soft and delicate tissue of the skin of the toe causing redness, pain, swelling, and on occasion infection.

You might also notice that there is a lighter colored area of the skin, which may be surrounded by the reddened skin.

It is fairly easy to pick up the signs and symptoms of an ingrown toenail infection.

Ingrown toenail symptoms are not hard to spot. Believe me, you will feel the pain and you will see the redness.

So the key is once you have evidence of an ingrown toenail symptom then get on it and seek treatment before an infection occurs.
